The Winter Blues

Welp, it’s official. Winter is really laying its cold hands on us in New England and it’s pretty easy to get a hint or a heap of seasonal affective-ness. It’s about this time that I personally start doing some mental time travel and pretend that Spring is closer than it is. I start planning my Spring and Summer outfits in my mind, and maybe make a few special dress purchases and hang them on the wall as a reminder that the white stuff on the ground outside will melt; that 10 degrees below zero is not forever. Really, time moves so fast and before we know it we are all going to be hot messes complaining about the heat.

(...my alter-ego lounging in a Givenchy Dress from 1956, daydreaming about Summer...)

Instead of letting Winter get the best of me and crawling under the covers for the next month, I’m starting a list of positive things to do this time of year. Since I’m not much of an outdoorsy gal in the Winter, my list includes things like reorganizing and simplifying my closet. Being a Millie Girl 12 Years Strong, I have quite the dress collection, and some of them are probably not so appropriate for my 40-year-old self. I know I always feel so much better when the clutter in my life is gone. Even though the clutter always returns and it’s time to clean up again... but hey, that’s what the Winter is for right? That and baking cookies. Lots and lots of cookies...

What are some things that you do to cure the winter blues? Leave your tips in the comments below!

It’s around this time I start to fantasize about spring and warmer weather dressing. I start to collect images and inspiration. It helps me to get through the cold weather and the sun setting so early. In addition I treat the winter as an opportunity to reset and focus on personal and creative projects at home. This year is a bit different as I bought a house this summer and adopted a puppy this fall so between the two I’m keeping busy! I’ve also started to buy a few spring and summer pieces I can layer under or over now while it’s cold. But I’m looking forward to simple Summer dressing and sandals! ?

As someone who moved from the cold north to the bi-polar climate of Texas, seasons are weird down here. It’s super hard to “feel” winter or look forward to “spring”. Literally, winter freezing temps one day, sunshine and 70’s the next. Just when I get used to a “season”, it shifts. My closet is a disaster, and as much as I’d like to pack up off-season clothes, it’s just impossible. So I keep summer and winter dresses in rotation. And fake myself out with hot cocoa at night.

I try to “feel” seasonal though; January and February have always been times when de-cluttering and getting organized comes easier. When March hits (and tax return $), that’s when I get the urge to purge my closet and start over.

The other day, I found a dress buried in my closet that I’ve had for over 10 years (and it came from Millie’s!!) Oddly, is still feels like “me”, although doesn’t seem appropriate for my age. I relate, Laura!

Love it all – and the fabulous vintage glam images!! For me, organization is key apres all the holiday hoopla ~ and redefine priorities for the year to come with a big to- do list!

Ooooo baking cookies, yes yes! I’m baking nearly every weekend. My fiance and I try to keep busy with day trips on weekends to indoor activities – museums and other local events in the area. Busy weekends and busy weeks = a faster winter?! One can hope.

Also that Givenchy Dress is giving me LIFE!!!
